Wine: Ignacio Marin Old Vine Garnacha 2015

Grape: The wine is produced using Garnacha Tinta grapes. The grape is black in color and native to the Aragon wine region of Spain. There is a debate as to whether the grape originated in Spain or Sardinia (island of Italy). However, it seems that Spanish origin is more likely and more widely accepted. The grape comes in 5 varieties – Red, White, Grey, Tintorera, and Peluda (Hairy Garnacha). This wine is also one of the wines in the blend known as “GSM” (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) and is also used in the blended wines known as Chateauneuf du Pape (pope’s new castle).

Aromas: leather, prune, toffee, strawberry, raspberry

Flavors: cherry, raspberry, oak, cedar, spice, pepper, vanilla

Body: Full

Alcohol: 14.5%

Acid: Medium

Sweetness: Dry

Tannins: Medium

Balance: Acid, tannins and alcohol all complement each other

Serving Tips: 60º to 65º F, in a burgundy wine glass, decant for 15 minutes

Aging: age up to 10 years

Food Pairings: flank steak, pizza, pork, lamb, game meats, chili

Winery Notes: The Ignacio Marin Winery is in the D.O. Cariñena wine region in Spain. The region is in northeastern Spain halfway between Madrid and Barcelona. The winery was opened by Ignacio Marin in 1903 and has remained in the Marin family since that time. In the “Marín” vineyard the Garnacha grapevines are 80 years old.
